The civilians have disregarded any desire for “primary experiences” and would rather get their information from lectures about a given subject. With this dependency, the people of this dystopian society lost their zeal for living. The Machine allows people to breathe artificial air, see in artificial light, listen to Machine-regulated music, “enjoy” lectures from which people learn, and it even puts people to bed. The Machine is not just part of peoples’ lives, they revolve around it.
